Good stuff I'm tellin ya. So here''s the story:
My dad, just recently having heart surgery, can't exactly do long road trips. That means that if I found a car that was not within 3 hours of here or so, he couldn't go with me to get it (I can't go myself or with a friend because I'm still 17). So I find this Sky, and he agrees with my observations that it's a good price, looks relatively clean, and that I should get it.
Only problem is that it's 8 hours away.
Right. So he accepts that we'll have to ship it. I know it's not a good idea to buy a car sight unseen, but this dealer that it's at has a good reputation, doesn't look sketchy, and we're having a Pre-Purchase Inspection done by a local, also reputable, mechanic on Monday. The mechanic that we're having do it commented that this dealer, Amelia Auto Mart, is a great used car dealer, and the owners are good people. I've never had a car shipped before, so if anyone has any tips or things to watch out for, you should tell me.
Yep so hopefully everything will be in tip top shape on the car and I'll have a Sky by next week!

I have always wanted a Sky or solstice. You are lucky as shit.

So much jealousy.

Holy shit, I just realized this car is in A Street class in AutoX. The same class as my dad's Boxster.
Many respects added.

In Florida you don't have to be 18 to purchase a vehicle. Just found out directly from the DMV, that if it is purchased in Florida, there is no age limit. You could be 11 and your name on the title.
![]() 08/09/2014 at 22:58 |

I mean, it has bilstein shocks and 245s all around stock. That's pretty impressive imo

As long as it sees AutoX and/or track days, I'm ok with this. Good luck with your purchase.

That's cool but also weird. My dad still has to buy it though because he has all my money for it lol.

It will! My dad only let me autocross my IS300 once. And that's it. It was great fun but the IS300 stock is not fast at autocross. Now, because I'm getting this for under 10k, my dad doesn't care what I do with it. I could plastidip the whole thing purple and he wouldn't care. So this thing will be hella autocrossed (I hate using the "word" hella but it applies)

Nyan Cat.
Oppo stickers.
Shark mouth.
Martini? Gulf?
The possibilities are endless.

Lol consumer reports must read oppo
"we recommend the Mazda Miata"
I kid, I kid. But I can't get a Miata so this is the next best thing. Plus it's cooler in a way because it's not even close to as common.
![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:09 |

Dip it with a full Martini theme? I think yes
![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:12 |

I'll let you drive it...over the INTERNET
![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:15 |

Yea but parts are more expensive, tons more support for a Miata, Miatas are cheaper, IMO the solstice/sky twins are ugly
![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:17 |

Just thought I'd throw that out there just in case. I loved going places by myself when I was 17.

I'm really jealous, congrats. I test drove one back in 2007 and again in 2008. I almost bought one, but money became an issue. They handle great and really get up and go. There's supposedly an easy mod that you can do to send the power upwards of 300 HP.
![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:20 |
|
Parts won't be much more expensive (if at all) when it comes to the mechanicals because the Sky is a GM parts bin car essentially.
Yes there is more support for Miatas but, for engine mods at least, I can run a lot of things that Cobalt SS guys run because it's the same engine.
NA and NB Miatas are cheaper yes, and the NCs are about the same price. I can't get a Miata though. Like, my parents won't let me at all, no matter what.
And, personally I think the Sky looks awesome, but the Solstice is eye bleach ugly.

Another florida opponaut?
![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:25 |

They are great cars. I know Miatas are technically more fun, but these have power to make up for it. They do handle amazingly because of their bilstein shocks and 245s all around! And that "easy mod" is actually a dealer mod. Bring it in to the dealer, and for 600 bucks they'll tune it for 290hp, 340 torque, 250 extra rpms til redline (which means you hit 60 in 2nd not 3rd), and No-Lift Shift, which means when you're trying to shift quickly you can keep your foot planted to the floor without it blipping at redline. It's awesome. Not sure if they do it anymore at dealers, but, I have a local shop that can do it instead!
![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:27 |

Nope, I'm in TN. Although technically yes I could be in southern Florida and it be that far away from me, I'm not.

Yeah I remember a Pontiac rep at the auto show about 5 years ago was telling me about the upgrade when the Solstice GXP Coupe was on display. Since the Solstice GXP and Sky Redline are exactly the same underneath obviously then it would apply to the Sky as well. I really want to buy a shitty non turbo Sky and LS swap it.
![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:32 |
|
I have an even better swap for ya.
http://www.carscoops.com/2011/06/pontia…
2JZ bolts right up to the Solstice's transmission with a 1JZ bellhousing. Engine mounts fit almost perfectly.
![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:35 |
|
Wait u can get a solstice but not a miata? That doesnt make much sense...
Thats the same 2.0? did not know that. i thought they used the 2.4
![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:37 |
|
Yeah but for the price of a 2JZ I could pay for an LS, transmission, engine mount solution, brakes, and better struts/shocks.
![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:37 |

The base model is the 2.4. The Redline has the 2.0t Ecotec from the Cobalt SS. The base model is slow as shit lol.
The only reason I can get a Sky and not a Miata is because the Sky is actually really wide, so, to my dad, it feels like a much bigger car. And because of that, it's apparently safer to him, so I can get it.
![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:37 |
|
Or you could just boost the shit out of the 2.0t ecotec that's in the GXP
![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:38 |
|
You can't describe my jealousy right now.
![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:41 |
|
Is it something along the lines of this
![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:41 |
|
While the 2.0 ecotec actually makes a decent noise, V8 > 4 cyl, plus I'd be concerned about turbo lag and killing the engine. I've always wanted a V8, anyway.
![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:42 |

True. You could find a Mallett one that's already swapped?

![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:42 |

Thats strange reasoning but ok.
According to crash tests they are pretty similar
http://www.motortrend.com/cars/2009/satu…
http://www.motortrend.com/cars/2002/mazd…
Miata is rated higher with roll-over resistance though
![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:44 |
|
Crash tests don't matter to my parents. If something is a 5 star rating with 25 airbags and it's a brand new car, it's still not as safe, to them, as a big ol 90s SUV, when in reality those are insanely unsafe.
![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:44 |
|
While that's definitely appealing to me, seems like I'd never find a good price for one considering it's over $21,000 just for the upgrade alone.
![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:47 |
|
There was one on Craigslist (I forget which one...somewhere in North Carolina though) for like 20 something grand
![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:51 |

Yea lol. Parent logic gotta love it. I got my Miata when i was 17 and it was the best thing i have ever done
![]() 08/09/2014 at 23:56 |
|
That ain't bad.
![]() 08/10/2014 at 00:05 |

The Sky is like a billion times better looking than the Solstice. Not even close!
![]() 08/10/2014 at 00:19 |

Still pretty ugly IMO
![]() 08/10/2014 at 01:39 |

You wouldn't download a car...
![]() 08/10/2014 at 06:15 |

I also think yes.

Buy me two plane tickets. One to get me to the dealer, one to get me home after driving it to your house. Then you don't have to worry about the shippers. :D I have lots of experience driving a variety of cars and could use a good highway slog roadtrip. Deal?
![]() 09/14/2014 at 17:43 |
|
So did you get the car?! I've always wondered what the Sky/Solstice drives and handles like...does it have a good amount of power?
![]() 09/15/2014 at 09:02 |
|
I still haven't sold my car, so no. But, I have driven a Sky redline and they drive great! Great power and they handle wonderfully!

Cool! I really like the Solstice/Sky....but Pontiac has shut down. I'm curious to see how they would have developed it if they were still around.
